Thursday, 31 January 2008 20:37

Students from Telford College proved they have the recipe for success when they swept the board at a prestigious national food awards.

The Food and Meat Training team from Telford College of Arts and Technology won four categories at the awards ceremony hosted by the Worshipful Company of Butchers Guild, including the NVQ Centre of the Year prize for food and meat.

Training Managers, Nancy Galashan and Martin Anderson said: “We are really thrilled to have won these trophies.

“It also recognised the important work we are doing within the food industry to ensure people working in the food supply chain are skilled and competent.”

The other two awards achieved by Telford College students were:

*The Seymour Manufacturing (International) Award, won by Sharon Fuller from, Freshway Foods for outstanding candidate at level one Food and Drink Manufacturing

*The Oakfield Foods Award, won by William Vingoe from Faccenda, for outstanding candidate at level two in Cleaning and Support in food premises

“The prize awards ceremony is to be held at the Butchers’ Hall, in association with the Meat Training Council, and all the successful students receive a cut glass trophy, a monetary award and affiliate membership of the guild,” said Nancy.

The training programme at the college is backed by the Learning & Skills Council (LSC) Shropshire, as part of the organisation’s commitment to developing a motivated and well-skilled local workforce.

The Meat Training Council is recognised by the Department for Education and Skills as a leading body for the food, meat and poultry industries, and also oversees courses and programmes including a range of National Vocational Qualifications.
